One Month

I know I'm quite late getting this posted, so I'm going to do my best at remembering what was going on during Sarah's first month of life.

While at Winnie Palmer, the pediatrician was worried with her weight loss, and she was a tad jaundice, so he requested we take her to our pediatrician for a weight check within two days of being discharged.  She was 9 lbs 13 oz at birth, and when we left the hospital, she was 8 lbs 14 oz.  Two days later, we took her in for a weight check and she was back up to 9 lbs 2 oz, so we were excited!  When we went in for her two week check up 9 days later, she was down to 9 lbs even, which wasn't good since most doctors want babies back to their original birth weight by then.  I had been exclusively nursing Sarah since birth, so our pediatrician recommended that I pump exclusively for a week and bottle feed her in order to keep track of the ounces she took.  We went back a week later for another weight check, and she was up to 9 lbs 12 oz, so I was very happy!  I didn't go back to nursing since bottle feeding was going so well, and I was feeling a little more rested since Kenneth and other family members could help feed Sarah.  I'm still pumping, which I'm going to try to do as long as I can!

Sarah has gotten very familiar with our pediatrician's office...we went three times within her first three weeks of life for weight checks, and then we found ourselves back at the end of her third week with a goopy eye.  Turns out, she has a blocked tear duct in her right eye.  She was prescribed eye drops, and I was taught how to massage it to help with the drainage.  The goop still comes and goes, but it's much better, and actually hasn't been goopy at all for over a week now.

Now that catches us up to her one month check up.  We went March 5th, and she had a great appointment.  She weighed 10 lbs 10 oz (75-90%) and was 22.5 inches long (90%).  I wasn't told the exact circumference of her head, but I was told it was average size, which I already knew because we have a much easier time getting things over her head than we did with her brother!  She had one shot, which she totally did not appreciate, and then we were on our way home.  I hope each check up will continue to be as easy as this one!

At one month of age, Sarah...
is still waking up twice at night  to eat (usually around 1:30 and 4:30)
is still sleeping in her mommy and daddy's room
would rather nap in someone's arms
does not particularly enjoy being swaddled, but it helps her sleep
takes eight 2.5 oz bottles a day
is starting to be wide-eyed a little more during the day
will focus her eyes on objects for a few seconds at a time
will spend short amounts of time in the bouncer or on the activity gym
is a precious baby girl!

Meet Lola...she is Sarah's Bla Bla doll, which was a gift from Aunt Blair.  Bla Bla dolls are apparently all the rage in the Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta. Blair bought Lola because that was Sarah's great-grandmother's name (Burger's mom).
Lola will be used to show Sarah's growth during her first year of life.
