Michael broke my mother's nose. With the back of his head. Did anyone else cringe when you read that? Everyone who we told the story to sure did. Mom was lying on the futon in their office, and Michael was playing up on it while she was lying there. He does this trick where he will literally jump straight into the air, stick his little legs straight out in front of him, and then land on his butt on the bed/couch/futon. He was doing that and having a great time when he suddenly threw his little body backwards on top of my mom and the back of his head hit her square on her nose. She came out with a big wad of tissue on her face and very calmly said, "Laura, I think Michael just broke my nose. I'm pretty sure I heard it snap." Which my response to that last detail was a full body shudder. When it had pretty much stopped bleeding, she took the tissue away, and I said, "Oh, yeah, it's definitely broken." So we took a trip to the ER (sans Michael - he stayed home with G-Dad and Daddy) to sit for two hours and have them say, "Yep, it's broken." They did give her an antibiotic because a broken nose is considered an open fracture, and it can get infected. The ER doctor told her to make an appointment with an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist, which she did the next day. The ENT told her, "Yep, it's broken." Then he gave her two options. She could have a minor surgery to pop it back into place, or she could not have the surgery and have a crooked nose forever. She opted for the surgery, which has a 90% chance of completely repairing the issue. 10% of people have to go on to have rhinoplasty. Mom fell in the 90%. She's all good.
Did you know it is possible to have a cast on your nose? We sure didn't until Mom came home from her surgery. Kenneth really wanted to make fun of her, but I wouldn't let him since our child was the one that caused her to need a cast on her nose in the first place. She only had to keep it on for a week. Hopefully, Michael's head will not cause anymore ER visits in the near future.
